What is split ac?

Split ac consists of two parts, an inside unit and an outside unit. The inside unit contains the cooling coil, a blower and a filter and the outdoor unit houses the compressor, condenser coil and the expansion coil or capillary tubing.

The indoor unit is mounted on the wall of the room and the outside unit is installed outside of the required room. Both the unit are connected through a copper cable.

Installation of split ac is easier as it does not require a long duct network. Multiple split unit can be installed using a single outside unit to cool multiple or a single large room.

How Split ac works?

To answer the question of how a split ac works, a gas refrigerant is pumped through the cooling circuit of the unit which then pumped into the condenser unit by the compressor. Here the refrigerant turns into liquid. The liquid is then forced through the indoor evaporator coil or cooling compartment, at high pressure.

The fan of the indoor unit circulates the inside air to pass across the evaporator’s fins. The metal fins here exchange the thermal energy with the air around it. There the refrigerant turns back to gas or vapour, removing heat from the surrounding air. The cooled air is blown back to the house.

How to clean split ac?

Periodical cleaning of ac is necessary to increase its efficiency and to prevent breakdown and growth of mould, mildew and other allergens. Both the indoor and outdoor unit of the split ac has to be cleaned. While cleaning the indoor unit it has to be dried up first by setting it on fan mode.

Then disconnecting power sources, the front panel has to be lifted up to clean the interior. Then unfasten the air filters and shake off the dust and then wash them with mild soap. Rinse them thoroughly with cold water and dry before fixing them back.

Before fixing air filters the cooling fins and coils have to be cleaned. For the outdoor part, dirt and debris should be removed from the bottom. With a brush clean the split ac fans and then wash them with detergent and water.

What is dual inverter AC?

Dual inverter ac has a twin-rotary compressor with a wider rotational frequency and energy-saving mode. When the ac cool down the room at a set temperature, the unit turns off entirely. Then it will start circulating some air after every 3 minutes and check whether more cooling is necessary or not.

These ACs vibrates less and make lesser noise and cools faster. Dual inverter ACs consume lesser energy than other ACs. It further enhances environmental conditions by continuously dehumidifying which is not done by the other types of ACs when they are offline. Though they are costly but saving electric bill, it will benefit the consumer economically.

How much electricity does an AC use?

ACS consume electricity depending upon the cooling capacity of the AC. 1 ton of cooling consumes 1KW energy. Consumption of electricity also depends upon the star rating of AC. The higher the rating lesser the power consumption.

If it is a 3 star AC and a non-inverter AC, it will consume 1 unit in 1 hour.5 star ACs consume much less electricity. A split AC consumes less energy than a window AC, again an inverter AC uses lesser electricity than other ACs. Dual inverter AC s are the most energy saver. Lack of maintenance of an AC increase electric bills.

What is a ton in AC?

Ton in AC describes how much heat can the AC remove from the room in an hour. 1 ton of AC machine can remove 12,000 BTU or British Thermal Unit of air per hour. Higher the tonnage, the higher the cooling capacity of the AC.

Per square feet of a room, 0.0016 ton is required, That means a room of 600 square feet needs air a conditioner of 1 ton, 900 square feet needs 1.5ton and so on. The height of the ceiling, the number of windows and airflow is also considered while deciding how much ton of AC will be purchased.

What is the difference between 3star and 5star?

The ACS have either rated 3 stars or 5 by star considering how much they are energy saver. The star rating considers two parameters, the cooling capacity expressed in British Thermal Unit and energy efficiency expressed in the EER unit. EER or Energy Efficient Rating is measured considering how much an AC is using power for a certain amount of cooling.

The highest rating is 5 star and its EER is 3.3 or above whereas the EER of 3 stars is 2.9 to 3.09. Energy consumption of 5 stars is 1.5 unit per hour and that of 3 stars is 1.6unit per hour. 5-star ACs cost more than 3 stars but brings less bill per month.

How to check AC gas level?

To check the gas level in AC is perfect or not, one can do a primary test himself. If one suspects the AC is not cooling down perfectly, he can keep his hand outside of the compressor.

If it is throwing hot air then the gas level is ok, if not then the gas level has come down. Settling down of ice on the refrigerant line indicates a lower gas level. If the pipe between indoor and outdoor is sweat, that also indicates a low gas level.  If the machine of the indoor unit makes a hissing sound that means gas is leaking.
