What is a solid-state drive?
Data was mostly stored on mechanical hard drives for decades. Traditional hard disc drives (HDDs) rely on moving elements to collect data, such as a read/write head that moves back and forth. This makes HDDs the likeliest computer hardware component to fail.
The new solid-state drives operate in a very different way. They make use of a NAND flash memory chip, which has no moving parts and provides near-instant access.
What are solid-state drives used for?
SSD adoption began in high-performance technical fields and in enthusiast PCs, where the drives’ extremely fast access times and throughput justified the higher price. However, with lower-cost mainstream laptops and PCs, they have since become an accepted option, if not the default choice.
SSDs have specific benefits in the following areas:
- Business: SSDs are often used by companies that operate with large amounts of data (such as programming environments or data analysis), as access times and file-transfer speeds are critical.
- Gaming: Gaming computers have always pushed the limits of current computing technology, necessitating the purchase of very expensive gear for the sake of gaming performance. That is particularly true for storage, as modern blockbuster games constantly load and write files (e.g. textures, maps, levels, characters).
- Mobility: SSDs have minimal power consumption, allowing laptops and tablets to have longer battery life. SSDs are also shock resistant, which means data loss becomes less likely when mobile devices are dropped.
- Servers: In order to adequately serve its client PCs, enterprise servers require SSDs for fast reads and write.

What are the different types of SSDs?
When you shop for an SSD, you’ll encounter a number of different terms such as mSATA or PCIe. So, what really does it all imply? Here’s a primer on what you need to know.
To connect an SSD to your laptop, you’ll need to use a special interface. The following are examples of common interfaces:
PCIe and NVMe SSDs: PCI Express (PCIe) is a high-performance interface that connects graphics cards, network cards, and other high-speed peripherals. This interface has a high bandwidth and low latency, making it suitable for communicating between the SSD and the CPU/RAM at high rates of speed. SSDs using this connection type employ the Nonvolatile Memory Express standard (NVMe), which has a greater input-output per second (IOPS) and lower latency than SATA (which we’ll discuss later). NVMe offers raw throughput of up to 16 GBits per second, which may be scaled up to 4,000 MB per second owing to numerous parallel channels.
Traditional SSDs, mSATA III, and SATA III: Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) is an older interface that was built particularly for storage and can transfer data at speeds of up to 6 GBit/s (600 MB/s). SATA is gradually being phased out in favor of NVME, which is much quicker. An upgrade to a SATA-based SSD might be beneficial for older PCs or laptops with a hard disc drive.
In the consumer market, SSDs come in a variety of storage capacities, starting at roughly 32 GB and going up to 5 TB. (Of course, enterprise-grade storage has much more capacity and therefore costs more.)
